What to Wear This Autumn: The Fashion Trends Taking Over Australia in 2026

The leaves are starting to turn shades of brown and burnt orange before they can even hit the pavement. The sun is rising a little later and setting a little earlier, which means one thing: summer is officially over for another year. Cue sad face... UNLESS (if you’re reading this), you’re probably a fashionista.

And while saying goodbye to beach days and linen sets can feel bittersweet, autumn brings with it one of the best style seasons of the year. It’s time to clear a little space in your wardrobe and swap summer staples for layered looks, rich textures and effortlessly cool pieces.

But what exactly is everyone wearing this autumn, and where should we be looking to buy our next fits? When I think of autumn fashion, I immediately think of “cool girl” style, the kind of outfits that look effortless but still feel polished, empowered and put together. Knee-high boots are back in a big way this season, paired with everything

from pleated skirts to tailored shorts and even capris, which I’m a huge fan of. Off-the-shoulder tops are also having a moment, adding a subtle hint of femininity while still working perfectly for those slightly cooler days.

Denim is another major player this autumn. Low-rise straight leg jeans are dominating the streets, often styled with a cinched denim jacket and a matching co-ord. Pleated skirt for a look that feels equal parts nostalgic and modern.

And of course, no autumn wardrobe is complete without the ultimate transitional staple, a trench coat, the secret weapon. Whether worn oversized paired with jeans and a tee, or layered over a mini skirt and boots, the trench remains one of the most versatile pieces you can own. I think a trench coat is the ultimate staple piece for your autumn wardrobe, and one to watch this year: Personally, I think the denim trench will be it.

The colours for your autumn wardrobe

While neutrals will always be a staple for the cooler months, this season we’re seeing a shift toward rich, earthy tones. Think chocolate brown, deep burgundy, burnt orange and olive green, colours that mirror the autumn landscape itself.

Stunning.

Soft butter yellow and dusty rose are also popping up in collections, offering a lighter contrast to the darker tones that usually dominate the season.

Things to do to elevate your autumn look

Think of the noughties, Y2K, yes, we’re still going back in time... and for all the right reasons, I love this, and I am so here for it. Big earrings, chunky bangles, suede bags, and statement rings. The ultimate cool girl, but make it 2026, by sleeking your hair back into a tight bun. Chefs kiss.

Where can we Aussies shop for the latest autumn looks?

Luckily, you don’t need to break the bank to achieve the perfect autumn wardrobe. Australian brands like Dissh, Princess Polly, Runaway the Label, Bronze Snake and White Fox Boutique are delivering timeless staples that fit perfectly into the autumn aesthetic and budget.

Vintage and second-hand shopping is also having a major moment, with many fashion lovers turning to curated thrift stores and resale platforms to find unique coats, denim and leather pieces.

The “cool girl” autumn outfit formula

If you’re unsure where to start, there’s a simple outfit formula that seems to be dominating the season: Knee-high boots, a pleated skirt or tailored shorts, a fitted knit or off-the-shoulder top, and an oversized trench coat.

It’s a combination that feels both effortless and put-together, and, most importantly, it works for everything from coffee dates to nights out. Because if there’s one thing about autumn fashion, it’s that the best outfits always look a little bit undone, but still completely intentional.
